Kamala Harris will have to tread carefully when she meets Binyamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, on Thursday. She has been more critical of Israel’s conduct of the war in Gaza than Joe Biden has. This plays well with some Democrats but opens her up to attack from Donald Trump. The Republican candidate leapt on her decision to not attend Mr Netanyahu’s speech to Congress on Wednesday, saying that she was “against the Jewish people”. (Ms Harris’s husband is Jewish.) Around half of congressional Democrats boycotted the speech, and thousands of people protested in Washington, DC. Republicans, though, reacted enthusiastically to Mr Netanyahu, who forcefully defended the war. Mr Netanyahu thanked Mr Biden and Mr Trump for their support. The president will also meet Mr Netanyahu on Thursday; Mr Trump will meet him on Friday.
