As the initial excitement about Kamala Harris’s sudden elevation to the top of the Democratic ticket fades, both main parties are settling into a relentless rhythm of campaigning. J.D. Vance will woo voters in Nevada on Tuesday and Arizona on Wednesday. The Republican vice-presidential nominee has been fending off new criticism for saying in 2021 that “childless cat ladies” (among them Ms Harris) were running the country. In the swing states of Nevada and Arizona he will probably try to focus on immigration and blame Ms Harris for the border crisis. Ms Harris plans to speak in Georgia, a state that Joe Biden narrowly won in 2020 but seemed unlikely to take this time.
